Australian mining magnate Andrew Forrest donates $ 300 million for philanthropy

Australian mining tycoon Andrew Forrest on Monday awarded Australia's largest grant of $ 400 million ($ 298 million) to Australian citizens, including health, education and the fight against modern slavery.

Forrest owns one-third of Fortescu Metals Group, the world's fourth largest iron ore producer.

(Reuters) - Turnpole, during a ceremony to announce Forrest's donation, was quoted as saying that the grant provided a record amount and "will change the rules in Australia's charity community."

Politicians from the government, the opposition, the famous actor Russell Crowe and health researchers attended a ceremony to announce Forrest's donation.

Forrest is frequently criticized for treating indigenous people in the mineral-rich western state of Western Australia.

Forrest will allocate $ 75 million to cancer patients, $ 75 million from the grant to educate children and another $ 75 million to combat modern slavery.
