German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the daughter of a priest, admitted that she had committed reckless acts during her youth.
In response to a question from NDR on radio and television about any "youthful sin" after its main rival, Martin Schulz, the former president of the European Parliament, admitted that he threw a detergent in a public swimming pool.
While Merkel said, "I smoked a cigarette at a fairly small age and did not tell my parents. So I can say it's a small sin. "
Merkel, 63, is expected to win a fourth term in the general election on Sept. 24.
