Conflicting parties in southern Sudan agree on power-sharing

In southern Sudan, a country that has been living in conflict since its separation from the motherland, Sudan, has not had previous peace agreements, most recently in 2015, only for months and then renewed fighting. Today, the conflicting parties signed a final agreement to share power, Tens of thousands of people were killed and millions displaced.

President Salva Kiir Mayardit and rival Riek Machar, in neighboring Sudan, signed the agreement, according to which the rebel leader intends to return to the unity government as first vice president among five in this post.

According to the agreement, there will be 20 members of the group of President of Southern Sudan Salva Kiir in the new government, composed of 35 members, while the group of SPLM leader Riek Machar and smaller opposition groups will receive the rest of the posts.

The conflict, exacerbated by personal and ethnic differences, has killed tens of thousands, uprooted an estimated one-quarter of the country's 12 million people and destroyed the economy of southern Sudan, which relies heavily on crude oil production.
