Dubai United Arab Emirates:-- The official Israeli "Kan" channel said that the current US administration has opened an investigation into a decision taken by former President Donald Trump days before he left office to lift the sanctions imposed on the Israeli billionaire, Dan Gertler over allegations of corruption in his business in the Congo.
According to the New York Times, Gertler used a lobbyist to persuade Trump to lift his sanctions before leaving the White House.
The Israeli billionaire investing in gold mines in the Congo has hired lawyer Alan Dershowitz, who is close to Trump and former FBI chief Louis Berry.
In the end, Gertler reached an agreement with the authorities that he would agree to external supervision of his business in the Congo for a year, in exchange for an exemption from sanctions, which included freezing all his accounts in the United States.
The investigation reveals that in 2002, the then Congolese leader, Laurent Kabila, sent a letter to then-US President George W. Bush announcing the appointment of Gertler as his representative in talks with the US administration.
International commissions of inquiry accused Gertler of signing unfair trade deals with Kabila in the Congo, which robbed the country's residents of many of their natural resources.
According to the investigation, Gertler also used elements in Israel to lobby for him, including attorney Boaz Ben Tzur, a lawyer for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and former US ambassador to Israel David Friedman.
When explaining the decision to lift the sanctions against the Israeli billionaire, it was said that his actions have a value for US national security, but without mentioning any details about it.
