Dubai, Daily Times: - After the success of satellites in predicting the Qi cholera epidemic before it happened, researchers at the European Space Agency expressed their expectations that they would be able to detect early epidemics.

Scientists have used artificial intelligence techniques to create a model that can predict the likely locations of cholera outbreaks.

The researchers used seven varying measurements from different space satellites to make their predictions.

Scientists looked for warm salt water in which the bacteria grow, as well as an increase in plankton (microscopic marine plants) to which these bacteria stick.

The scientists found that the prediction was very reliable ahead of the monsoon season, with a prediction accuracy rate of 93.3%, but they say more improvements are needed to increase the reliability of the forecast and make sure that services are not closed unnecessarily.

This space-based cholera outbreak prediction program has yet to be tested in other regions other than India, but scientists hope it will be a good starting point for improving prediction programs and thus potentially saving lives in the future.
