Russian scientists carefully lowered modules made of glass and steel into the frozen water through a rectangular hole in the ice.

They explained that the lake, which is the largest freshwater lake in the world, is an ideal location to house this observatory due to its depth.

The Baikal telescope will compete with the giant "Ice Cube" neutrino observatory, which is buried under the ice at a research station in Antarctica.

This telescope is the result of a collaboration between Russian, Czech, Slovak, German and Polish scientists.
