Trial of the former President of Argentina for complicity in a terrorist attack

Former Argentine President Cristina Fernandez Kirchner will be brought to trial for hiding the role of Iran in the terrorist attack on a Jewish center in the capital in 1994, according to the Spanish newspaper El Pais, which has been stripped of parliamentary immunity.

The judiciary is investigating whether the memorandum of understanding signed with Iran during Kirchner's presidency was part of a plan to conceal Tehran's role in the bombing of a community center in Buenos Aires, killing 85 people and injuring hundreds.

Hector Timerman, a former foreign minister under Kirchner, was placed under house arrest on the same case, which was based on a report by prosecutor Alberto Nisman in January 2015, four days before he was found shot dead in the head.

The Senate will meet when the new senators take office and have 180 days to make a decision. In order to approve the withdrawal of parliamentary immunity, it is necessary to get 48 votes in the Senate.
