Snowstorms during the night caused the snow to build up to 90 centimeters in length across Ireland and Scotland.
The Irish Government stated that the entire Irish public transport system had been out of service, airports had been closed and roads were "in very serious condition".
Electricity has also been cut off from more than 100,000 homes and companies. The Irish stock market has closed, as do all schools and most government departments, with the red alert still at its highest.
The government called on the army to help save hundreds of motorists and passengers stranded in the snow, move the staff of the National Health Authority, authorities closed roads and schools, and canceled many flights across the UK.
