The guards exchanged shots with the attacking pirates, who were believed to be Nigerians; Whereas, the ship’s crew, composed of Russian-speaking sailors, was instructed to barricade themselves and not approach the windows, while the ship’s guards fired at the pirates, who in turn fired bullets that hit the ship before leaving.
At least one of the attackers may have been wounded by a live bullet during this exchange of fire.
