The Israeli airline, El Al, also announced the start of direct flights to Marrakesh, and plans to operate five weekly flights, including Casablanca.
A statement by the company quoted the Israeli Minister of Tourism, Yoel Rozbozov, as saying at the launch ceremony of the company’s flights, which was attended by the head of the Moroccan Liaison Office to Israel, Abdel Rahim Bayoudh, that this flight service “will enhance trade, tourism and economic cooperation between the two countries.”
Morocco has the largest Jewish community in North Africa with a population of 3,000 people, and about 700,000 Jews of Moroccan origin live in Israel.
It was the first flight that linked Tel Aviv and Rabat, in December 2020, and included Israeli and American delegations, during which the tripartite agreement was signed between the three countries, in addition to a set of bilateral agreements between the two sides.
A spokesman for the Israeli Prime Minister, Ofir Gendelman, said in a tweet on his Twitter account: "Another step in strengthening Israeli-Moroccan relations, as the direct flight between Tel Aviv and Marrakesh was launched today by El Al and Israir."
The Israeli Public Authority for Broadcasting said: "With this, a direct flight line between Israel and the Kingdom of Morocco was launched."
The Israeli and Moroccan flags and the word "peace" were placed in Arabic, Hebrew and English on the plane, which took off in a festive ceremony.
The Moroccan and Israeli sides aspire to develop bilateral diplomatic relations between the two countries, as well as to strengthen strategic partnerships in many fields, including tourism.
The Kingdom of Morocco intends to attract 200,000 Israeli tourists annually, especially since the Kingdom of Morocco includes hundreds of Jewish shrines for rabbis and rabbis of Moroccan origin.
And earlier, the Moroccan Minister of Tourism, Nadia Fattah Al-Alawi, revealed that Moroccan tourism aspires to attract Israeli tourists who are not of Moroccan origin, and who have never visited or known the Kingdom, commenting, “They will fall in love with it.”
