Pakistan: former sportsman Imran Khan as prime minister

Abu Dhabi, UAE / The former athlete, cricket champion, Imran Khan was sworn in and formally took over as prime minister after his party won the July 25 general election in Pakistan.

Imran Khan, 65, is the darling of millions in Pakistan, where he was the leader of the national cricket team, the most important sport in the country that won the world championship in 1992.

The cricket bat was Amran Khan's slogan against corruption, in a country with an atomic weapon, with a population of about 207 million.

Amran Khan's Movement for Equity led the results of the July 25 legislative elections in the second democratic transition to power in Pakistan, but did not achieve a clear majority.

The party won 116 seats, less than the absolute majority (137 seats) needed to form a single government.
