"It is a very sad day for all of our family, Pierre Cardin is gone. The great designer has crossed the century, leaving France and the world with a unique artistic legacy that was not limited to fashion," his family wrote in a statement. "We are all proud of his stubborn ambition and boldness that he demonstrated throughout his life," the family added.
And Pierre Cardin preceded many in opening a "corner" for his designs in a supermarket and presenting men's fashion shows. He also widely adopted a licensing system that provided him with the ability to spread around the world, placing his name on a variety of products including ties, cigarettes, perfumes and mineral water.
The family added in their statement, "Pierre Cardin, who was born in Italy, never forgot his origin, carrying at the same time an unconditional love for France."
