Frederic de Klerk is the president who released the anti-apartheid icon, Nelson Mandela, and shared the Nobel Peace Prize with him.
The FW Declairc Foundation said: We mourn with great sadness the death of the former president quietly at his home in Fresnay after a struggle with cancer, leaving behind his wife Elena, his two children Jean and Suzanne and his grandchildren, according to "France 24".
The foundation stated that the family will announce in due course the funeral arrangements.
De Clerc announced that he had cancer on his 85th birthday, on March 18 of this year.
Many remember his famous speech on February 2, 1990, in which he announced the lifting of the ban on the African National Congress and other liberation movements, and in the same speech, he ordered the release of Nelson Mandela after 27 years in prison.
