The dangerous secret behind the death of tens of tons of fish in Lebanon The dangerous secret behind the death of tens of tons of fish in Lebanon

The vision, Lebanon: - Within a few days, no less than 40 tons of dead fish were piled up, a number described by the military and fishermen in Lake Qaraoun as unprecedented, on the banks of the lake connected to the Litani River, the longest river in Lebanon, and in which activists have been warning for years of water pollution in it due to drainage Sanitary and waste.

Volunteers collected carcasses of rotting fish near the Qaraoun Lake at the Litani River.

Piles of garbage floated on the surface of the lake next to the dead fish, as swarms of flies spread in the place.

The fish, and their numbers in the thousands, have decomposed in the water.

The river authority said this week that the fish is poisonous and carries a virus, and urged people to avoid fishing on the shores of the Litani River due to "a worsening disaster threatening public health."

Pollution has led to a ban on fishing in the lake since 2018, which was established in 1959 at a large dam to collect water for electricity and irrigation.

And recently, volunteers removed clumps of sticky tar from some beaches along the Lebanese coast, after an oil spill, environmental activists warned that it would harm marine life.
