Vision Egypt News: The French judiciary is examining the accusation of former president, Nicolas Sarkozy, of trying to bribe a judge and abuse of influence, in exchange for classified information about an investigation into allegations that Sarkozy accepted money from L'Oréal's heir, Lillian Bettencourt, for his 2007 presidential campaign.
Sarkozy denies that he offered Judge Gilbert Seibert to a prominent position in Monaco as a bribe in exchange for this information.
Since 2013, investigators have monitored phone calls between Sarkozy and his lawyer, Thierry Herzog, while they were investigating allegations of Libyan funding in Sarkozy's 2007 campaign, and they were communicating using cell phones registered with pseudonyms.
According to prosecutors, the eavesdropping revealed that Sarkozy and Herzog had discussed on multiple occasions contact with Azibert, the judge of the Court of Cassation, who was well acquainted with the Bitencourt investigation.
Prosecutors confirm that Sarkozy offered to help Azibert get a job in Monaco, in exchange for help from inside the court. This was denied by Sarkozy, who told the (PFM) television channel that “Mr. Azibert never got the job in Monaco. ".
Herzog and Azibert are on trial with Sarkozy on charges of corruption and abuse of influence, and the three face up to ten years in prison and heavy fines if convicted.
Sarkozy and his party, which has represented the center-right for years, believe that the investigations against the former president are politically motivated.
